Preparing for Gotcha Day

Bringing your new furbaby home is a big transition!
Read about the following topics to see what to prepare for ahead of Gotcha Day!

Remember when you take your puppy to your veterinarian, to bring along the vaccination and deworming records so that your veterinarian can help you schedule the next vaccinations and deworming protocol that is appropriate for your area.

There should be no vaccines or treatments given at this first visit!  This is simply a well-puppy check. Please do not allow your veterinarian to start your vaccination series all over again. Over-vaccinating can cause problems and no one wants that for your new precious puppy! We carefully handle all of our vaccines with great care and administer them as recommended per their respective manufacturer. Please note that we may choose to alter the recommended vaccine schedule on a case-by-case basis according to the needs and health of each puppy.

BREEDING RIGHTS: If you’re planning on purchasing breeding rights with your puppy, please schedule your puppy's first wellness check as soon as you have a plan in place for receiving your puppy. Some vet offices are difficult to get into, and we require the first wellness check to occur within 48 hours of receiving your puppy to comply with your initial breeding rights health guarantee. If this isn't possible, please let us know when it's scheduled.

It takes only about 5-7 minutes, any by adopting one of our Idaho Jewels Poodles, you will qualify for our FREE activation code, BR1JP12919, giving you immediate coverage. Trupanion doesn’t even ask for a credit card number, so you don’t have to remember to cancel when your free trial expires!

What to Expect on Gotcha Day

Along with your puppy, we will also be sending along a small "puppy care package" which includes:

  • information on how to care for your new puppy and what to watch for. Please take the time to read these documents as they do contain important information for the transition period! Copies of these documents will be attached to our emails for your review beforehand.

  • vaccination/deworming records & health certificate

  • a small bag of your puppy's food

  • a small package of treats. Break off tiny pieces of this soft, nutritious treat to reward your puppy for good behavior! A little goes a long way and your puppy will be motivated to please you!

  • a small bag of pre & probiotics powder with some instructions for the first few days to sprinkle a very small amount on your puppy's food one time a day.  This trip to a new home is stressful and this will help settle your puppy's digestive system.

  • a small toy

If you opted in for a microchip ($25), we will send you instructions on how to register it, so that if your pet gets lost, you can be notified when it's found by your local shelter.

If you opted in for a Snuggle Puppy ($40), we will provide that along with your puppy care package. Buying a Snuggle Puppy from us directly ensures that the Snuggle Puppy has carried the scent of their mom and/or the playmates of the pup to provide them with extra comfort and less stress overall.

Traveling Home

For planning your travel home, we want you to be fully prepared to travel safely with your new dog.

  • Food & Water Bowls - We will provide a care package that has a bit of food, but please plan to bring a water bottle to fill with water for your dog.

  • Paper Towels & Wet Wipes - Just in case your dog gets motion sick or has an accident.

  • Kennel - If your dog is small and the drive is less than an hour, you're welcome to bond with them in your lap on the ride home as an alternative. You can see what kennels we recommend on our Amazon Storefront.

You should feel safe to make a few stops for potty breaks in the grass, as all of our puppies have received a safe amount of vaccinations prior to leaving our care.
